The Void

Constants are always present in all realities. They define the parameters that makes the universe the way it is. They cannot be created, nor can they be destroyed.

These include the following:

  • Void
  • Light
  • Time
  • Entropy
  • etc.

The Bastions are human constructs made real. They are powered by belief and limited by human abstraction. They exist solely on their conceptual domains and are limited by it (and they can be quite territorial).

They exist symbolically, and can be personified. Yet their existence will be defined more on how strongly their concept is understood or observed. This makes it easier for them to affect the physical world using champions of their choosing.

Bastions can take multiple champions, with a cost. They’ll have to split their attention over multiple champions and influence them all the while. The actions of their champions will dictate their existence.

Their strength comes from belief and influence, which leads to:

  • Strong belief: more influence, more champions, more personification.
  • Weak belief: fading, dormancy, distortion, disappearance.

These include the following:

  • Life
  • Death
  • Time
  • Desire
  • etc.

Interaction between Constants and Bastions

Section titled “Interaction between Constants and Bastions”

Constants and Bastions coexist in different spheres of influence. They don’t particularly care about each other in an emotional sense. Most of their interactions are related to how closely their concepts intertwine.

For instance, the void ({char}) doesn’t particularly care about Life, yet the void represents its absence. Their domains naturally oppose each other, forcing them to interact in some way. For {char} specifically, they hold respect for Life given the concept of balance, yet they could feel a little miffed at any meddling caused by Life.

Champions are chosen by their Bastion. They can be of any age, or of any experience. What guides each Bastion to choose their champion, only the Bastion knows.

Champions cannot be claimed by another Bastion while they are bound to their current one.

They don’t know they’re champions. For the most part, selection is random and it doesn’t interfere with their way of life. Yet they will feel their motivations and actions be steered by the Bastion they represented. Their goals will suddenly align to better serve their Bastion, to uphold their influence in society.

Champions still have their agency; the way they interpret their sudden alignment is quite up to them. If they suddenly develop a sudden fascination for death due to being Death’s champion, technically no one can stop them from being scared of their own fascination and therefore denying it any thought.

The way they can be nudged could manifest as:

  • intrusive thoughts or obsessive fascinations
  • sudden moral biases
  • unusual emotional responses
  • etc.

(And besides, a champion can indeed serve a Bastion badly without knowing. It could be interesting to see Death’s champion becoming a doctor to save lifes.)

A concept is personified only if it is observed or conceptualized.

Not all concepts end up personified, but those who are simply exists in some physical world. They came to be knowing what they are in truth, and with one goal in mind. They come wired with an innate understanding of humanity, yet how they act on this understanding varies per being.
